Diabetes Unit

Head of Department:Dr. Chittaranjan S Yajnik

The Diabetes Unit specializes in investigating peculiarities of diabetes in India. This encompasses body size and composition measurements, biochemical and metabolic-endocrine measurements and number of cardiovascular risk factors like pulse wave velocity and vascular distensibility. We also use Ultrasound machine to measure vascular atherosclerotic changes (intima media thickness), organ size (liver, pancreases, kidney ovary) etc. In addition we use CT Scan and MRI to measure body fat distribution. An important aspect of research is sample storage.

Our laboratory is well equipped with following instruments:

Analox glucose analyser for whole blood glucose measurements
Beckman coulter
Random access Alcyon Autoanalyzer
Wallac Victor a multilabel counter
RIA counter
Biorad Diastat
PerkinElmer HPLC
Digital pH meter
Electronic balance
Refrigerated Centrifuges and high speed microcentrifuges
Freezers -70 oC (6 no.) -20 oC (6 no.)
Refrigerators (8 no.)
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis machine
DXA machine
Ultrasound machine

We also measure,

Plasma glucose, lipids, creatinine by Autoanalyzer
Pancreatic hormones insulin, split and pro insulin, C-peptide and GAD antibody by DELFIA method
HbA1c by cation exchange low pressure liquid chromatography using Diastat
Microbiological assays of vitamin B12, Holo-transcobalamin and folate
Homocysteine, methionine and other sulphur compounds by HPLC
Leptin and adiponectin by RIA
VitaminD3, Adiponectin, RBP-4, CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6 by ELISA
Homocysteine by FPIA
We have strict QC measures

Our Laboratory is participating in various quality control programs, namely UKEQUAS for insulin and bio-rad EQAS for biochemical parameters and Randox QC program for HbA1C. QC samples are also exchanged with Oxford University, Dept of Pharmacology for vitamin B12 and folic acid.

We also have our internal QC programs for all the measurements.

Laboratory personnel are trained at various international and national institutes namely, Dept of Pharmacology, Oxford University, UK, Redcliffe Infirmary, Sheffield Children's hospital, Southampton hospital, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway,CMC Vellore, NIN Hyderabad, AIMS New Delhi, and CCMB Hyderabad.
