K.E.M. Hospital Microbiology laboratory was established in the year 1982, which functioned independently to provide specialized microbiology testing. Since its establishment the laboratory was headed by Dr. K. B. Niphadkar, an eminent Microbiologist in Pune. He passed away on 12 July 2013.

 Along with diagnostic services, the laboratory staff is actively involved in research activities, funded by national and international organizations.

Research projects carried out are during last 2 years are :

1) Multisite pneumonia study funded by Fondation Merieux (Paris)

2) Evaluation of efficacy of nanoparticles coated with rifampicin against Mycobacterium tuberculosis funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), India

3) Alliance for Surveillance of Invasive Pneumococci ( (ASIP)
