About K.E.M. Research
K.E.M Hospital, Pune celebrated its diamond jubilee in 1972. At that time a need was felt to further improve
and expand their services and the most appropriate way to do so was to start a Research Society.
Thus KEMHRC
initiated its activities in 1973,
with Dr. Banoo Coyaji
as the Chairperson
and
Dr. V.N. Rao
as the Research Director.
The Primary objective of the centre was to carry out research in the medical field on topics intimately
related to population control, health, hygiene and maternal child health.
Soon the Indian Council of Medical
Research
(ICMR) recognized KEMHRC as one of its Human Reproductive Research Centres.
The scientific programme
is evaluated annually by the Scientific Advisory Committee while the Board of Trustees, Management and General
Body Committees monitor the Centres' activities.
As the scientific activities expanded, the Dept. of Science & Technology, Ministry of Scientific & Industrial
Research,
Govt. of India, advised the Research Centre in 1985, to register as an independent society under the
Societies Registration Act 1860. The centre currently has several projects encompassing clinical trials, social
sciences and operational research. Service projects like the IMPACT funded project are also going on.
On an average around 30 projects are undertaken each year.
Our scientists have made several notable contributions in the international scientific field and been
invited to participate at international and national meetings.
